Happy Birthday to my amazing mother, Jewell Rhodes Mayberry! This (extremely amateur) website is devoted to your
60 amazing years of life!

Just wanted to send a special greeting to say Happy Birthday! It will be extra special for you with having your kids and grandkids there for your special day. We haven't known you too many years, but by sharing your daughter with our son and being able to share a grandson and a granddaughter gives us a special bond. I saw your sign about spoiling the grandkids. Just make sure you don't do all the spoiling and save some for us. Ha!
Hope your 60th is special. God bless you on this day and may He bless you with many more birthdays to come.

Jewell,
Happy Birthday! I am thankful not only for my friendship with Sarah, but to have met you as a result of our friendship as well. Your love for your family is an inspriation to myself and others. I cherish the lunches, dinners, showers and all the memories we've shared. Cheers to you!
All my love,
Kristin Rocha Rike
I met your mom during my MBA year at Pfeiffer in Charlotte, 2003-2004. I have to admit I don't recall the exact name of the classes I took with her but I will never forget my first class with her:
A tall, energetic and enthusiastic lady entered the room and started our first lesson with a radiance that was spiced up with a tint of chaos. I thoroughly enjoyed her classes and got to know her a bit better every week. In the end she agreed to be the second corrector of my Master Thesis.
I always enjoyed being around her, because she was friendly, positive and very quirky, too. :)
I think Jewell is my most treasured memory of my time in the Charlotte. I wish her a very very happy birthday amongst her beloved ones. I hope she knows that her work and personality are brilliant. I hope she enjoys her time with her family, and with traveling around the world on 'voyages fantastiques'. I do hope to see her again one day, either here in the Netherlands or back in the USA.

Admitted Doggerel in Praise of Jewell Rhodes Mayberry Who Deserves Better than This
It was three score years to the day
That Jewell Rhodes Mayberry came here to stay
We're all better for it
Even economists and pole vaulters and poets
And the odd baker who passed by her way.
Happy Birthday Jewell! I'd like to share what I told myself on my sixtieth birthday. There's a lot of life left after sixty.

Dear Jewell,
So glad you have finally joined the "Sixty Club". There are so many advantages being 60. Senior Friday at Belk, Drinks 25 cents at Wendy's, discount drinks at Bojangles, and many more.
Be sure to take advantage of these, seniors expect special treatment.
Happy Birthday,
Spencer and Linda Storie

Happy Birthday, Jewell!
In honor of your 60th birthday, it seems to be a great time to think back about the 20+ years we’ve known each other. I could provide details of the stamp we put on UNCC English Department, Wildacres, Phoenix (my first CCCC presentation when you came to the session so I’d have a friendly audience), CCCC conferences from one side of the country to another, RCCC, dozens of bars, and this only covers our academic forays. Someone once tagged us as Thelma and Louise, but clearly, we’re still around. Probably our biggest adventure is when you were recovering and still on chemo, and you still met the challenge of coming along with the McGill girls and Caryn to Barbados. What a trip-- In fact, all the great times we’ve shared, most of which we will never speak of, Barbados was our most exotic. Are you up for another sometime? I don’t think the world has seen enough of us in action yet.
Extending all my love and friendship for you on your 60th! May we share many more milestones together.
Love,
Sandie
Dear Jewell,
I can't even remember what year we went on that trip, I think it was in Oct., I remember hearing on the beach that OJ was acquitted for double homicide.
I remember you with your expensive purse walking outside the chattel house, or whatever they are called, too funny! Everyone's hair is hilarious in the pictures!! I think it was wickedly humid. I remember in the taxi from the airport to our hotel/resort the driver said something about it being a third world country and to Sandie and me, you said, "I don't do third world countries!" What an experience that was! Andi was worn out from driving on the left side of the road and probably having to dodge animals and people, while looking for the statue of the 'man with the big chin (chain)' because we needed to turn there or something. I think we were all crammed in a little clown car.
Happy Birthday,
Pam
From my sister Andi:
Thinking about our trip to Barbados, there wasn't a drop of liquor left on that plane! They gave us bottles of wine to take w/ us. Sandie was hanging out in the flight attendants’ kitchen area telling stories. We drank so much on that flight (FREE) & were smoking cigarettes.
Poor Jewell was going thru chemo. Well, maybe that was the perfect treatment!!
Happy Birthday Jewell!! Fun fun memories!!!
Andi
Happy 60th Birthday, Jewell! I am so inspired by all your amazing accomplishments thus far and excited to see what you do next! Have a wonderful birthday with your family.
Love,
Marisa
Happy 60th Birthday, Jewell! I'm very glad that Jeremy met Sarah, so that I was able to meet you and Dave. I always enjoy visiting with you and always looks forward to the next time we all get together. Hope you enjoy your day!

Jewell,
It is hard to believe that we have known each other for nearly 28 years now. Wow, has time flown by! And where did all that time go? It seems that time and life has been so good to you and your infectious and vibrant personality is still present in everything you do.
Just sending you a little note to say I hope your 60th birthday is Great!
Wishing you the Happiest birthday ever!
Much love, Dea
Jewell, You may never know the difference you make in the lives of your students. I am blessed that I have the privilege to call you my professor - and my friend. I have learned more from you about life than about literature - and that is saying something because you are a marvelous professor. When I look back at my undergraduate time, you are at the heart. I'm grateful that I met you and blessed to know you now as my beautiful, insightful, generous, thoughtful, inspiring friend. God bless you on this birthday - and for all the years to come.
Michelle Inman
Jewell, happy birthday! I know we don't see each other much but I value my memories of our time in school and our dinners with Nel. I always feel like we fall right back in sync when we see each other again. Keep reading, keep smiling, and enjoy this new decade of your life.
Love, Brigette - and let's see if we can do our dinner in the new year.
Dear Jewell, I love being "new, old friends" with you. Margi Jones and I coined that phrase years ago since we had taught together early in our careers, then lost touch until the boys got to be good friends. I remember you and I sitting together at Westside Pool years ago sharing our mommy experiences. Then work and life took us in different directions for years so what a pleasant surprise to get the chance to be friends again and share fun times. I enjoy our canasta and Bible study groups so much and love having you be a part of those. Nice to have someone else that understands how hard it is to have your children and grandchildren so far away. Happy birthday, dear friend and we'll have fun being in the 60s together.
Love, Doris
Happy 60th, Jewell! I have so many fond memories of you from years gone by...always enjoyed our visits and our children playing together, jogging with you, nursery workers @ 1st Baptist, Salisbury getting Dave & Lee mixed up when they went to pick up your Matthew and my Erin , dinners out w/ you & Dave, and who could forget Crafts for Missions. Those were some great times that really don't seem that long ago, except somehow our children are now just about the ages we were. Whew! The years have flown and now we are grandmothers. I sure would love to see you sometime, Jewell. One of these days when we visit family in Statesville, we've got to get down to Salisbury. I hope your 60th is just the best year.
Happy Birthday & much love & God's blessings, Anne Templeton
I've always admired your and Sarah's relationship. The mother/daughter bond is something I can only imagine. But, you extended that kindness, selflessness, love to me for my wedding. Your generosity helped me purchase my flowers. I wouldn't have been able to do it with out you. You're a special women! And many people have been, are, and will continue to be blessed by your grace.
Love, Gabe
Happy birthday, Jewell! You are my favorite Disney World trip "chaperone" and a fantastic lady. Thanks for always making me feel welcome in your home!
Kristen Clary Shuette
Happy Birthday, Jewell! Little did I know when we met in Chapel Hill -- you seemed to be running all the time -- that we'd be sharing birthday wishes into our 60s! And then there was Junior Woman's Club. You set a very high standard as president! We're not "junior women" anymore, but you're still keeping up a fast pace and high standards. And I'm still trying to keep up! Happy Birthday, friend!
Beffie Cook
Jewell,
I met you years ago when we taught together at Catawba, and I am so glad that I did and that we have remained friends. I feel like you are a kindred spirit in so many ways. I like the fact that I have somebody as wise as you are walking a few steps ahead of me on the path of life (oh, that sounds so cheesy) so that I can learn from you. I imagine that like me, you probably love quotations, so here is one that I have been drawn to lately that I will share on this auspicious birthday. I believe you already understand the sentiment very well. "Listen to your life. See it for the fathomless mystery it is. In the boredom and pain of it, no less than in the excitement and gladness: touch, taste, smell your way to the holy and hidden heart of it, because in the last analysis all moments are key moments, and life itself is grace." Happy birthday, grace-filled Jewell! I am happy you were born.

Happy Birthday on turning 60!
Its just a number so don't get snippy
Your in the new 30s or so I've heard
Been there done that its all kind of absurd :)
Wish you the best good health and long life
May your years continue without much strife.
Love hugs kisses
Linda and Bill Mayberry
Jewell,
I can't believe it's been more than twenty years since we became friends, but I'm so glad we did, and so glad you are still part of my life. Even though we don't talk as often as I'd like, you are never far from my thoughts, and I love that no matter how much time has passed, when we get together, it's like no time has passed at all. Thank you for all the friendship and support you've shown to me over the years, and never forget, I am always just a phone call or a short trip up 85 away. And never give up on your dreams of sharing your stories with others, because the world needs to hear them. Let's do more lunches in 2014 and beyond.
Love always,
Lorie

Dear Jewell,
I hope you have a wonderful birthday! I have countless fond memories of you, your family, and your home over the past twenty years. Thank you for each and everyone one of them. You are such a warm and loving mother, teacher, and person. I hope you have a fantastic year! Happy birthday!
Love and hugs,
Rosemary
I’ve attached a couple of photos that I found from my college days. They were taken on the front lawn of Joyner Dorm. Jewell lived on first floor. I lived on 4thmy freshman year. That is when Jewell introduced Mike (my husband) and I. When Mike and I first met, I had gone with Jewell to a girl’s basketball game. Diane Bradshaw is the girl in the photo with Tony Waldrop and is standing in the other photo. Diane was on the women’s basketball team. I lived in Joyner for two and a half years before moving into my sorority house. My sophomore and Junior years I was on 2nd floor in a suite of sorts where Marsha Mann and Alma Troutman lived. They were both buds with Jewell at that time too. I was always willing to go with Jewell to track and cross-country meets cause she knew all of the guys on the teams.
I can remember Jewell’s laugh, her constant procrastination and her love of writing. I have to chuckle when I think of her being on a college faculty. I’m sure she knew all of the tricks of her students.
She was forever overdrawing her bank account too.
We have stayed in touch over the years. I remember when you were born. If my memory serves me, your parents were living in Odum Village at UNC while Dave was finishing dental school.
I’ve replayed some wonderful memories as I’ve thought of our friendship over the years. I love your mom and hope 60 is good to her. I’m right behind her!
Happy 60th Jewell! Thank you for always being so kind, understanding, and fun! Happy day, happy year, happy always and ever. We love you so! Love Laura Midgett
Happy
Birthday Jewell!!!
60 years
old!!! Let's see how many years I have known
you out of those 60 years. We moved to
Salisbury in 1981 and I think you moved here shortly after that. We probably met you guys in Nell and Earl Bullard's
Sunday School class. If I am remembering
correctly that was about thirty one years ago!!! Wow!!
Remember the "girls"
trips to the beach? I can still picture
the spot where you got the speeding ticket around Bennettsville and the faint
yell for help when the shower door fell!!
More good times!!!
Remember skipping
preaching and catching up in one of the pre-school SS classes at FBC when we moved
back from Blacksburg in 1990? It felt so
good to catch up!!! Even that was 23
years ago!!! Wow!!! Where have the years gone??
Do you remember
the "hot" Summerfield walks and sitting in the driveway catching up
as we cooled down? Now I am not sure we
could walk down the driveway!!! There
are probably good reasons we have moved on to book clubs and canasta!!!
So many memories
and so many more to come!
Happy 60th Birthday to a special friend!!!
Jenny

Dearest Jewell- a big birthday! A time to reflect on life's choices and live's chances and be thankful for planning and hard work and luck! I feel so fortunate that Bob and I have had the opportunity to share so much of this time with you (and Dave too, of course!). You are my friend that is a thinker, one that ponders life's big questions, that sees what others don't, that looks for meaning. Life is never ordinary for you, and being close to you has made me look deeper as well. I value all that you bring to our friendship, over half our lives now. Have the best of days! Love Sandy
Jewell,
I want to wish you a very Happy #60! You are a very special friend, and you deserve the best of birthdays and a very special year. Enjoy!
Love and a huge hug from,
Nancy White
Happy Birthday Miss Mayberry!! You will forever be the hippest, coolest and most down-to-earth-yet-the- farthest-thing-from-it teacher I've ever had. I still remember our talks, and I'll never forget all the laughs. Never stop bringing that swift foot of yours to hind quarters! Hope all is well, and again - Happy Birthday :-)

Sarah (and many, many others)
